PAKOMAK FRIEND OF FASHION WEEKEND 2012

The Fashion Weekend in Skopje, which was held from 2 to 11 April, was organized under the topic of ecology and that was a good reason for Pakomak to get engaged with its own activities and to help raise environmental awareness among the general public.

The Pakomak’s stand on the Fashion Weekend was made of packaging and were used 500 plastic bottles for background, plastic crates for chairs and cardboard boxes for tables. The company made a good example of how packaging can be creatively re-used in everyday life and thus help reduce the waste.

Pakomak addressed the public with the question: "Are you recycling?”, noting the importance of recycling as mandatory fashion trend for this, and all subsequent seasons.

ECO WORKSHOPS FOR THE YOUNGEST: "BE IN USE RECYCLE BIN" AGAIN IN SKOPJE KINDERGARTENS

Pakomak organized a workshop for "More efficient management of packaging waste" on January 30 and 31 in the hotel Holiday Inn. The workshop was attended by 9 companies for waste management from: Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Turkey, Romania and Belgium.

The workshop was an opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss about finding ways for effective cooperation with the companies and the municipalities, as well as raising the awareness for selection of packaging waste.

PROJECT "GREEN DAYS" IN RAMSTORE

In the scope of the project "Green Days" which was held in April in Ramstore mall, Pakomak organized art contest "We draw green" that involved children from the primary schools in Skopje. The youngest shared "green" messages through their drawings and the best art drawings were rewarded.

In addition, Pakomak organized several creative workshops, where children learned how to re-use creatively the packaging waste.

Within this project, wobblers and stickers were displayed in Ramstore with educational messages for the importance of recycling various packaging. They were positioned in the market in accordance with the packaging of the products which were placed on the shelves.

CONTAINER PLACEMENT IN MC DONALDS

In in the period of May 2012, Pakomak put containers for selecting waste in McDonald's restaurants. The purpose of this action was promotion and education of the youngest visiting these restaurants for the need of separate waste disposal, as the only precondition for a cleaner future for all of us.

PAKOMAK PARTICIPATED ON "SKOPJE KREATIVA" WITH CREATIVE WORKSHOPS

Within the festival for creative Industries „ Skopje kreativa", held from 14 to 16 June in the City Park, Pakomak organized workshops for industrial waste and packaging design together with the graduate students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the students from the high school "Lazar Tanev".

The art works that were made in the two days workshops were presented on the final day of the festival for the visitors to enjoy them.

During the festival Pakomak also held an official presentation of the company for dealing with packaging waste, and visitors of the event were able to enjoy the “eco Corner” built from plastic bottles and see the winning pieces of the competition "Trash for art”.

SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT "OUR GREEN BORDER"

The Agency for Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Environment, organized the project "Our green border", which included cleaning the boarders Deve Bair, Bogorodica and Kafasan as well as the coast of River Radika and Lake Matka from packaging waste.

Pakomak supported this action and contributed by donating equipment for collecting waste.

CONTAINERS FOR SELECTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL ON VODNO

In collaboration with Komunalna Higiena – Skopje, Pakomak set containers for plastic and paper waste in the area of mountain Vodno and the Millennium Cross.

With this action we continue with the efforts to preserve the environment and at the same time - educate the population of the need for selective waste disposal and its recycling.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THE CLIENTS – METHODS FOR COORDINATION WITH THE LAW
FOR PACKAGING WASTE FOR 2011

We would like to inform you that in accordance with current legislation, companies who received permission to deal with packaging waste in April and May 2012, cannot offer retroactive adjustment with the Law on packaging and packaging waste, for the period prior to receiving the permit for treatment of packaging waste. In other words they cannot offer compliance with the Law on generated packaging waste in 2011 to the companies.

The adjustment with the Law on quantities of packaging waste, circulated on the market in 2011, can be achieved in 2 ways only:

1. To be members of a collective system that had a Permit for waste treatment in 2011, or to be registered as independent processors of packaging waste.

2. To pay funds into the state budget in accordance with the pricelist defined in Article.40 of the Law.

COMPANIES WITH POLLUTING PACKAGING WASTE CAN BE MEMBERS ONLY ON ONE WASTE HANDLER

Given the large number of official and unofficial information present during this period in the business community, in addition we are providing the official correspondence from the Ministry of Environment and spatial planning from 15.08.2011. In the correspondence it is clearly stated that a company contaminant cannot be a member of two or more collective waste handlers at the same time. Thus, the quantities of packaging waste collected in a given month, can be reported to only one collective waste handler, with which you have a valid contract for that month.

We, in PAKOMAK sincerely believe that you, as our members, are satisfied with our work so far and will stay in our system that we are building together. However, if for some reason you decide to leave our system, we inform you that it can be done by a written notice to PAKOMAK respecting the notice period specified in the contracts. Until the date of termination of the contract, the amount of quantities should be reported in our system, and for this, at the end of the year, you will receive a confirmation from us for your compliance with the Law for the period during which you were our member.

TRAINIG FOR DEVELOPING A PROGRAM FOR PREVENTION OF PACKAGING WASTE

Pakomak organized a one-day free professional training to prevent creating waste from packaging for its clients. The training program presented was suppression and prevention of packaging waste, which is a legal obligation of every legal entity that cumulatively, on annual basis, has packaging and packaging waste of more than 30 tons. This obligation comes into force on 01.01.2013.

More than 140 representatives from 110 member companies of Pakomak, that exceed the limit of 30 tons, according to reports on packaging waste in 2011, were part of the training organized in the Hotel Continental on 30 and 31st of May.

On the training were presented the expectations of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning for the companies. The company "Ecoembes" from Spain exchanged practical experience with the participants, and the Macedonian companies Miskom, Bass Tutifruti and Tikves exchanged their experiences with the process of production and the opportunities and plans for reducing packaging waste.

THE IDENTIFICATION AND LABELING OF PACKAGING COMES INTO FORCE FROM 01.09.2012

In accordance with the mandatory identification and labeling the packaging for the nature of its materials, Pakomak helped its clients by explaining the Regulation on labeling of packaging.

The system for identification and labeling of materials, was visually presented to the member companies and they also received practical information on how and where to place the labeling and the need to have in place all the tags provided for the composition of the packaging exceeding more than 5% of the total weight of the packaging of the individual product.

In a letter sent to them, the companies were informed of the legal deadline of September 1, 2012, by which they have to fulfill the legal obligation for identification and labeling of their own packaging.

NOTICE FOR THE USE OF GREEN DOT SIGN ON THE PACKAGING

Pakomak is a member of the Association Pro-Europe, representing 34 national companies from 33 European countries and Canada since 05.20.2011. PRO EUROPE has the license to use the sign Green Dot, and each national company, member of PRO EUROPE has an exclusive license for Green Dot for its home country.

In accordance with the Agreement that the companies have with PAKOMAK, the use of this sign on their packaging is free. PAKOMAK is authorized to charge an annual fee for the usage of the sign on packaging of the companies that are using the sign on their products (even those who import and sell the products in Macedonia), but aren’t members of the PAKOMAK system.

Currently, the representatives of PRO EUROPE perform an analysis of the labeling of the packaging of products present on our market and their manufacturers/importers. The use of the sign by the companies that are not members of PAKOMAK, will be considered unauthorized. PAKOMAK is already preparing a Prices list for the license to use the mark on products sold on the territory of Macedonia and the price range for such a license will be from 2 to 10 Euros/ton annually, depending on the type of packaging waste and the quantities placed on the market.

PROMOTION OF PAKOMAK’s CLIENTS IN RAMSTORE

Pakomak, during its educational campaign in RAMSTORE, displayed the logos of its customers on some of the promotional materials. In this way they were promoted as socially-responsible companies that care for the environment.

Wobblers were placed on the product shelves, and throughout RAMSTORE stores (Centar, Novo Lisice and Chair) stickers were placed on the floors. On them, besides the logos of our member companies, it was also conveyed the message for the importance of sorting and recycling of packaging waste.

The constant promotion of our member companies to the public is an additional benefit that we offer to our customers.

THE VISIT TO THE MUNICH FAIR

Pakomak was part of the world's most important trade fair for environmental protection and waste management, IFAT ENTSORGA, which was held from 5 to 9 May in Munich.

The 2012 IFAT ENTSORGA was attended by more than 2,900 exhibitors from 54 countries who presented their products, innovations and services on an exhibition space of 215,000 square meters in Munich. This year the fair had a record attendance of more than 125,000 visitors from over 180 countries, who were introduced with novelties for protection of the environment, and new ways for more effective handling with the waste.

PRO EUROPE CONFERENCE IN ROTTERDAM

Representatives of PAKOMAK attended the annual meeting of key people from leading companies dealing with waste from 32 countries, members of PRO EUROPE. On the conference it was also exchanged the experiences and information on the achievements of the national systems from the States members of PRO EUROPE.

The countries of Benelux and Scandinavia show best results in recycling, and they have only one company-handler for collective packaging waste. In these countries recycling rates go above 75%, followed by Austria, Germany, France and Spain with average recycling rates of over 60%. Unfortunately, the Balkan countries have recycling rates of 10-20%, and Poland, which has over 30 companies- collective handlers of packaging waste, has among the lowest rates.

Pakomak presented the results for 2011, which reached a rate of 15% recycled amounts from their customers, announcing that in 2012 the rate will increase for 50% of recycled quantities.

DONATION OF UNDERGROUND CONTAINERS FOR PACKAGING WASTE AND SEPARATE COLLECTION OF GLASS
BOTTLES FROM PAKOMAK TO THE CITY OF SKOPJE AND COMUNAL HYGENE

In accordance with the objectives of the Law and the obligations of collective handlers to create infrastructure for separate collection of packaging waste with municipalities, PAKOMAK signed a donation agreement of 4.2 million denars with Komunalna Higiena Skopje (KHS) for the procurement of underground containers for packaging waste and for the start of separate collection of glass bottles.

The underground containers will be placed on 30 locations in the downtown area, while the containers for glass bottles (during the initial phase) will be placed on the streets where there is a concentration of restaurants which ‘produce’ large amounts of empty glass bottles from wine, beer, water and other drinks.

The project will be implemented during the autumn, pending the completion of the procurement and installation procedures. The packaging waste collected in these containers (plastic, paper, cans and glass) will be collected from KHS and taken over by PAKOMAK, to be further recycled.
